Om Prosjekt Aktiv Ungdom Samnanger:
Me i Ungdomsrådet i Samnanger ønskte å engasjera oss i situasjonen i bygda på ein direkte måte, med å vera pådrivar for at ungdom sjølv kunna setja fokus på situasjonen i bygda. Eitt av måla var å skapa tilhøve for eigenaktivitet og at me unge også er med på å setja premiss for kva me skal driva med på fritida. For mindre enn eitt år sidan var det ingen uformelle møteplassar, ingen fritidsklubb eller liknande der me kunne møtast på tvers av etniske skiljeliner og religion. Me ønskte å engasjera unge som fell utanfor organiserte aktivitetar innan idrett og korps og som har utmaningar med tanke på skule, arbeid, rus, foreldregenerasjonen, handicap med meir. Dei konkrete måla våre var å produsera og arrangera og sjølv framføra ei framsyning med tema som dreier seg om våre røynsler, vårt opphav og våre draumar.
Etter at me fekk i gong Aktiv Ungdom, har me utpeikt stadfortredarar for oss innan kvar gruppe. Me har sett på oss sjølv som organisatorar heller enn gruppeleiarar. Dette har det vore praktiske grunnar til, då nokon av oss har flytta ut av bygda medan andre går på vidaregåande skule i byen. Deltakarane i Aktiv Ungdom-gruppene har i stor grad vore ungdomskuleelevar, og det har vore viktig at dei får til å møtast når dei vil. Coachen vår har òg vore eit viktig knutepunkt, og me har samarbeidd bra i lag.
Me hadde som utgangspunkt at me ville arbeide for større toleranse og forståing på tvers av skiljeliner og å få dei som elles ikkje er aktive i organisert verksemd til å engasjera seg sjølve.
Me har lukkast med å rekruttera mange unge: 67 ungdomar har vore aktive med i ulike grupper innan prosjektet. Om lag 2/3 av desse er ikkje aktive innanfor organisert verksemd, anten i kulturskule, korps, idrett og liknande. Ein del av deltakarane er opne om at dei har diagnosar og problem med å delta på vanlege vilkår innan organisasjonslivet. Aktiv Ungdom har gjeve dei nye moglegheitar for å visa at dei kan – og delta på nye arenaer!
Det viste seg at sjølv om me ønskte å rekruttera frå ulike etniske grupper i ei bygd med menneskje med opphav i 24 nasjonar og 19 trussamfunn, var det vanskeleg å få til rekruttering blant ikkje-etnisk norske. Forutan etnisk norske har det vore deltakarar av thailandsk, polsk og svensk opphav. Me freista å få til rekruttering gjennom å vera med på å arrangera internasjonale kafear der menneskje frå mange nasjonalitetar møtast. Alle grupper har vore opne for alle, annonsert i avisa og på facebook og me har freista å få med fleire ved å spørja direkte. Ingen kan tvingast, og det kan vera at tema og aktivitet ikkje var fristande. Me trur at dette tek lenger tid enn me såg for oss. Me vonar at det vert lettare framover, for i 2012 har me fått eit aktivitetshus som me ungdomar får nytta fleire dagar i veka for å møtast. Vona er at det vil verta lettare på sikt å møtast på tvers av skiljeliner.
About Project Sign-in Samnanger Youth:
The project "Sign-in Samnanger Youth" is a national youth initiative project. The initiative was on the part of the Youth Council in Samnanger, consisting in 7 participants aged 15 - 18 years. The objective has been arranging for creative participation for youth across religious and ethnic barriers, and especially with regards to those who cannot or do not want to engage in organised youth activities in the community. We who constitute the youth Council in Samnanger want to engage on our own terms the challenges we recognise locally, and especially those related to a situation of cultural diversity among us. We have 22 nationalities and 19 different religions dispersed in a population of a total of 2.500 inhabitants. There are increasing problems with drugs and youth dropping out of school. There are no youth clubs or informal meeting places, and youth between 13 and 18 years have nothing to engage with outside of organised sports and church activities. In order to combat xenophobia, embrace cultural diversity, create cultural agency and a possible new direction in our lives, learn about leadership and democratic participation in civic life, engage society and learn to cope with different perspectives amongst ourselves, we will create a cultural event that is wholly based in our own initiative. We will organise, produce and ourselves be actors and contributors to a cultural event with street dance show with rap music and lyrics as well as theatrical performances and pop concert. We will ourselves develop the themes, be actors, dancers and composers, plan everything ourselves, produce the lyrics and the music, costumes, dance patterns, media presentations and so forth. We will work together in weekends, beginning in march 2010 and ending in march 2012 (12 months). Each of us participants will recruit other youngsters into our work committees and lead these towards completing the show. We will divide activities between ourselves based on our interests and competence (all of us have experience with cultural performances and production). Each committee will depend on the others in order to complete the production of the show and in order to show our production to the larger community. The themes of the show will engage the stories of our lives; our role in society, our diverse background and experiences from being born out of 22 nations, our religious views, and how we understand our present situation and our future prospects and dreams. We will face our challenges by way of dialogue and by giving expression to our situation. We will ensure that participatory experiences will be open to youth facing problems of inclusion, participation, poverty and drug problems as well as a few physically handicapped youth. From these experiences, we believe that some of us may find a new direction in life and experience enhanced cultural and civic agency. Our objectives are, among other things, to create a youth culture of respect and engagement, reduce the current problems of increased drug abuse and xenophobia and make space for participation for those who face difficult challenges of unemployment. Our method will be active participation and informal learning. We will move from dialogue concerning current problems to engaging directly with our situation by creating something together that can also be communicated to the society at large, and also by way of the internet and new social media. In order to accomplish this, we want to use a trained coach to guide us through possible communicative obstacles and we will also use professional artists in the community in order to raise the quality of our informal learning process and the actual show. We will cooperate with a number of local organisations (volunteers) in order to safeguard our arrangements and activities, raise the awareness of adults on tasks and themes of our interest and needs, and make local organisations engage with youth. We also want to work with these local NGOs in order to create a space for our future participation within these. We believe in agency and direct participatory experience, and that the experience we can draw from this project will increase our ability to participate more actively also with respect to political life.
This project will address the following aims and objectives: Integration of youth with special difficultuies, active participation of all youth in informal activities, enhance the participation of youth in societal development and democratic processes, prevent xenophobia and promote cultural understanding and equality regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or religious comittment.
